Orcas Island Fire and Rescue is a rural, combination, all-hazards department serving the community and visitors of Orcas Island. Orcas Island is located in the San Juan Islands off the coast of Washington State. Spanning 57 square-miles, the island varies in beautiful topography and is accessible only by boat and air. A top tourist destination with vast recreational opportunities, the island population is over 5,000 year-round residents, doubling in the summertime.
Call volume averages 1200 calls annually, and consists of fire/hazmat, medical, and rescue. Without a hospital on the island, crews often provide more comprehensive care than urban agencies, and work with local air medical transport providers to get patients to a higher level of care.
Shifts are a 4-platoon system, 48-on/144-off with a crew of 2 (one FF/EMT and one FF/Medic). Volunteer Firefighters and EMTs respond alongside the crew to bring emergency services throughout the island. Pay and benefits will be dependent on experience and per the L3911 CBA.
Positions are open until filled and applicants will have the opportunity to be placed on the ongoing hiring list.
