For the third time in just over two weeks Orcas Island Fire and Rescue responded to a wildfire – this time in the Deer Harbor area.
Crews were dispatched at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 1st to the 100-block of Clay Farm Road after reports of a wildland fire came in from area residents. A size-up completed upon arrival determined the fire to be approximately one-acre involving moss, grass, brush, stumps and trees.
Firefighters utilized tools to isolate the fire from spreading further while apparatus shuttled over 9,000 gallons of water to the scene, leaving the fire completely contained within a wet line by sundown Tuesday. Crews will remain on fire-watch throughout the week.
The cause of the fire was determined as accidental after a small burn pile was not properly extinguished then left unattended.
“While we may be surrounded by water, we are not immune to the dangers of fire risk during summer conditions,” shared a local resident.
Orcas Island Fire would like to remind you that fire danger in San Juan County is moderate at this time. Residential and commercial burning is closed. While recreational camp fires are allowed, they should consist only of clean, dry firewood and be housed in a fire ring or bowl no bigger than 3-feet in diameter with a 2-foot perimeter. It is important to be sure your camp fire is completely extinguished before you leave it unattended.
